New Wood: Sand smooth using fine sandpaper, vacuum sanding dust. Wipe clean using a tack or cloth dampened with paint thinner or mineral spirits.
Old Clear Finishes in Good Condition: Remove grease, dirt and wax. Sand lightly in the direction of the grain to remove any gloss.
Old Clear Finishes in Poor Condition, Lacquer or Shellac: Remove completely. If the old finish contains wax or stearates, regardless of condition, remove completely. Sand and remove sanding dust with tack rag or cloth dampened with paint thinner or mineral spirits. Interior Surfaces of Stained Steel or Fiberglass Entry Doors: Do not sand stained door surface. Wood stain must be thoroughly dry.
NOTE: To ensure satisfactory results, always prepare a sample or test the product on an inconspicuous area to determine compatibility prior to completing the entire job. Do not apply over finishes containing stearates or aluminum oxide.
If you scrape, sand, or remove old paint, you may release lead dust. LEAD IS TOXIC. EXPOSURE TO LEAD DUST CAN CAUSE SERIOUS ILLNESS, SUCH AS BRAIN DAMAGE,ESPECIALLY IN CHILDREN. PREGNANT WOMEN SHOULD ALSO AVOID EXPOSURE. Wear a NIOSH- approved respirator to control lead exposure. Clean up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and a wet mop. Before you start, find out how to protect yourself and your family by contacting the National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or log on to www.epa.gov/lead.
Stir all sheens except ZAR ULTRA Gloss Polyurethane, thoroughly before and during application. Do not shake! Apply straight from the can. Do not thin! Use a clean bristle brush or lambs wool applicator. Dip the brush in the can and let excess drip off. Flow ZAR ULTRA on in the direction of the grain. Avoid over brushing which may trap air bubbles in the finish and result in streaks. Make final pass of applicator a skimming stroke across the entire surface. Apply thin coats at a rate of 500-600 sq.ft. per gallon in the direction of the grain. Avoid over- brushing which may trap air bubbles in the finish and result in streaks. Make final pass of applicator a skimming stroke across the entire surface.
Floor Application: If floor is to be stained prior to applying ZAR ULTRA, let stain dry according to manufacturer’s drying directions.Areas with poor ventilation such as closed rooms, corners and hallways may take longer to dry. Prepare surface as above. Use a lambs wool applicator and spread the finish towards the opposite wall following the wood grain. When approaching the end of a run, turn the applicator towards you and spread out excess material parallel to the wet edge. Feather out all turns. For maximum protection, apply 3 coats of ZAR ULTRA. Allow floors to dry 24 hours before subjecting to light foot traffic; 3-5 days before moderate (normal) traffic or moving furniture. To avoid marring floor, lift and place furniture. One week is required before maximum resistance is achieved. Do not cover floors with rugs before one week has elapsed. If floor should become marred or scratched, simply sand lightly using fine sand paper, vacuum all sanding dust, wipe clean with a tack cloth or microfiber cloth, apply another coat to repair the finish.
11 Oz. Spray Can Application: Apply when air and surface temperatures are between 65°F-85°F. ZAR ULTRA 11 oz. spray cans should be shaken vigrously before and during application, except ZAR ULTRA Gloss Spray Polyurethane. Practice on scrap wood to establish proper spray technique. Hold container 10-12 inches from surface. Apply light, even strokes. If bubbles or runs occur, wipe clean with paint thinner or mineral spirits. Allow each coat to dry at least 2 hours. Drying time may vary due to temperature and humidity. Sand lightly. (Do not sand fiberglass or wood grained metal surfaces.) Remove sanding dust with a tack cloth or a clean rag dampned with mineral spirtis. Reapply. Apply minimum of 3 coats. Allow final coat to dry 4-6 hours.
Areas with harsh exposure to sun, weather or foot traffic will show wear more quickly than other surfaces. If this occurs, clean affected areas and recoat as necessary.
