Frequently Asked Questions

Can Bondo be used on wood?

Yes, both Bondo Wood Filler and Bond All-Purpose Putty are great options for repairing wood because they dry hard and fast.

Bondo Wood Filler is the preferred choice as it is specifically manufactured for wood. The All Purpose putty contains a polyester resin where the wood filler does not. The resin is a plastic that sets hard but does not have much flexibility. Since wood expands and contracts you want a product that can flex with the wood so it will stand up over time.

Can Bondo get wet?

Bondo can get wet, but it isn't waterproof meaning that short term exposure to water has no lasting effect on the product. However, long term continuous exposure will cause it to absorb the water.

Can Bondo be stained?

Yes Bondo can be stained, sanded or painted. Just make sure it is clean and dry first.

Can Bondo be used on plastic?

No, Bondo is not recommended for use on plastic. The reason for this is that plastic expands and contracts and when Bondo hardens it won't adhere and will crack come off over time.

Can Bondo be applied over primer?

The short answer is yes Bondo can be applied over primer. However, there are several important steps you need to take when doing so. It is preferred to apply Bondo to bare metal but if you do need to apply it over primer be sure to sand the primer prior to applying.

Once you have sanded the primer you can apply the Bondo in thin layers trying to keep as smooth as possible. When dried, sand til smooth and then apply primer.

Can Bondo be applied over paint?

Bondo can technically be applied over paint, but it is not recommended. Paint prevents Bondo from adhering properly to the metal so over time it will chip and flake back off.

Are Bondo fumes dangerous?

Bondo does release fumes and gasses so we always suggest wearing a respirator mask when working with Bondo and working in a well-ventilated area.

When is Bondo sandable?

Most Bondo fillers are sandable in 30 minutes are less. Be sure to check the label for specific times for your product and allow to completely dry prior to sanding for best results.

Will Bondo stick to concrete?

Bondo does stick to concrete and can be used to repair small cracks or imperfections. It can also be painted to match your concrete surface.

Can Bondo be thinned?

You can thin Bondo and in some applications it is preferred as it offers enhanced flexibility and better blending and feathering.
